1945 წელი. აშშ. ქალაქი პორტ-ფილიპი. აქ ცხოვრობს გერმანიიდან ემიგრირებული აქსელ ჯორდახი ოჯახითურთ. ერთ ჭერქვეშ მცხოვრებ უახლოეს ნათესავთა ამ ჯგუფის წევრებს ერთმანეთი, მაინდამაინც, არ უყვართ. აქსელ ჯორდახს სძულს თავისი სამუშაო – ფუნთუშების ცხობა, მთელი ქალაქი, ეს ქვეყანა და სამყაროც კი... იგი ხშირად ფიქრობს, ერთ-ერთ ფუნთუშაში საწამლავი ჩადოს, ისე ხუმრობით და ჭკუა ასწავლოს ყველას... მისი მეუღლე მერი – მონასტრის თავშესაფარში აღზრდილი მკაცრი ზნეობრივი პრინციპების მქონე ქალია, ცოლ-ქმრული მოვალეობის აღსრულებასაც კი ცოდვად მიიჩნევს და სძულს კოჭლი ქმარი, მისი გაქონილი ულვაშების,უხეში ქცევის,როხროხა და როყიო ლაპარაკის გამო; უფროსი ქალიშვილი, გრეთჰენი,მუშაობს აგურის ქარხანაში და საღამოობით მორიგეობს ჰოსპიტალში, სადაც მეორე მსოფლიო ომში დაჭრილ ჯარისკაცებს მკურნალობენ,ქალიშვილი ოცნებობს მსახიობობაზე და მისი საზრუნავი მხოლოდ ისაა,კარგად გამოიყურებოდეს და წონაში არ მოიმატოს; მისი მომდევნო ძმის,მშობლების ნებიერა 17 წლის რუდოლფის მიზანია,როგორმე მდიდარი გახდეს და ამისთვის იგი თავდაუზოგავად მეცადინეობს. ოჯახის წევრთაგან რუდოლფს განსაკუთრებულად აღიზიანებს უმცროსი ძმა ტომასი, რომელსაც მუდამ ""The lazy Tom smells like a forest hunter ."
